Otranto Cathedral
Walking through the villages of Salento is a unique experience. The air you breathe tastes of history and tradition. The historic centre of Otranto is one of those places where life flows slowly and the streets recall the past with nostalgia. The Cathedral, nestled among the small houses and shops, is the city's most important place of worship. Its white medieval façade and large Gothic rose window conceal one of Europe's greatest treasures: an enormous Byzantine mosaic depicting scenes from the Old Testament. Not to be missed!

Galatina and St Catherine of Alexandria
The historical centre of Galatina is also an open-air museum. Capitals, frescoes and monumental doors carved in Lecce stone accompany the walk through the small streets and numerous courtyards. One of the city's most fascinating places of worship is the Basilica of St Catherine of Alexandria, built in the 14th century. Inside, this majestic church, entirely frescoed with pictorial cycles of the Giotto school, houses the relic of the Eastern saint. Continuing the walk through Galatina's historical centre, a tasty stop is the ancient Pasticceria Ascalone, home of the first Lecce pasticciotto: it is here that the recipe for the most iconic dessert in Salento was born.

Lecce Baroque
In Lecce, Baroque is in the air, not just on the porous, golden stone of its buildings. Visiting the city of art with your nose in the air is a unique experience. The architectural style that characterises the city is elegant, lively and opulent. Representing all the opulence of the 17th century is the enchanting Basilica di Santa Croce, the symbol of the city, with the most famous Baroque rose window in Italy. Floral motifs, animals and human faces come together to create embroidery and lacework in Lecce stone, a local limestone rock that is malleable and easy to work.
